At the bottom of the
Gorakhnath Hill stands the temple of Sekh Narayan.
Four pools at two different levels give this shrine
a character of its own. Submerged in the algae-green
pond, the image of Surya, the Sun God is also
associated with Vishnu, stands as it has for
centuries. The god represents in the carving along
the foothpath are Shiva and Parvati. Two stairways
led to the temple of Sekh Narayan at the top. This
has been a popular pilgrimage since the 15th
century. Nestled against an overwhelming cliff, the
single-storied temple is adorned with askew of
erotic carvings on the struts An image of Vishnu is
held here within.
Bishankhu Narayan commands another wonderful view of
the valley. A road off the Godawari road leads to
this site, beyond the village of Badegaon. Despite
its significance, the shrine is represented by a
natural twisting rock cave. A precarious and narrow
rock-cut stairway leads to a wood platform, from
where you can see the tiny opening.
The story goes that Shiva was forced to hide in the
cave to escape from the demon Bhasmasur, to whom he
had given the power to turn all the living things to
ashes and dust by the touch of his hand. Vishnu
thwarted the demon by making him touch his own head
and demolish himself. The hill next to the cave is
believed to be the heaped ashes of Bhasmasur.
